A few months ago I sat down with artist Ryan Brown in my studio to record an interview for his podcast. I first met Ryan many years ago in Switzerland. I had been selected for the Alpine Fellowship which was a three week residency for a small group of artists. Each week a guest artist would join us, along with theologists and philosophers such as Roger Scruton. Ryan Brown spent a week with us. I was exposed to artists and ideas that differed from the small atelier I had spent the previous 4 years immersed in. It was a thought provoking time and planted a seed which later encouraged me to leave and to pursue my own work. Seeing Ryan in Florence again and our conversation was once again thought provoking. We talk about the Florence Atelier system, and making it out the otherside, how our ideas about painting have changed over time, and where it all began for me.
